Jens Birch Goosander close up This is one of the male Goosanders (Mergus merganser) I photographed this spring. They were a whole lot of them diving for fish in our local river and sometimes they came pretty close whenascending to the surface. However, they always spotted me very soon when the shutter of the E-1 started to go and then left the shore. The yellowish colour of its white feathers is from the light of the setting sun.

Pekka Nihtinen Goose Beach

The increasingly (and a bit disturbingly) common and bold Branta leucopsis have captured a beachhead on one of the beaches in eastern Helsinki. Subway line between Vuosaari district and city center crosses the sea at this point. You can see a woman in bikini going for her morning swim on the background behind the geese and trying to avoid goose droppings. Until last year I lived just 300m from this beach and used to swim here often.
